I had the opportunity to dine in White Rock the other night. Random, I know, but sometimes a guy has to stretch his food boundaries to find those hidden gems. The 5 Corners Bistro is one of them.
Me and Matt (my brother) arrived at the quaint room around 7, and there was a few tables there. The room is nice, looks very clean and inviting. A stage has been recently erected so I imagine this will lead to live music in the future. The owner showed us to our table and chatted with us for a while. Hes really into this restaurant and hes made it a true family affair 4 of his children work at the restaurant including his son who served us.
I imagine this was the servers first serving job, as he seemed a little timid. He was very polite and looked after all of our needs, but he wasnt as engaging at the table as I would have liked. I like to be sold on menu items, but in all fairness, its not like me or Matt asked many questions.
First course, I had a goat cheese terrine that had a side salad of mescal greens with candied pecans and was garnished with radish. The terrine was superb, served at the right temperature. Flavourful and delicate, a great way to start the dish. The salad is a little pedestrian, im seeing these salads too often these days. But, as a side salad, it served its purpose and didnt detract from the dish.
Matt had a French Onion Soup. Now I thought I was totally over this cliched soup, but the young (really young at 21) chef really restored my confidence that comfort food can be done with a nice artistic flair. Instead of the typical onion confit with beef bone stock topped with a crouton and cheese, this french onion was closer to a foam the french influences were clear. The tastes were sweet and savoury, capturing the essence of the dish while taking it somewhere unfamiliar.
After our appetizers, we were treated to sorbet as a cleanser, a strawberry delight that was made in house. Very fresh and clean, a perfect treat mid meal.
For dinner, I had the rack of lamb. I love lamb, so Im bit of a snob about it. I ordered it rare and it came out cooked perfectly. The gremolata was a nice touch, added texture and protected the tender flesh during cooking. I would have liked a little goat cheese in the crust as well though, but thats just me. It was served with decadent gratin potatoes that were creamy and stellar. I was really happy with it. Side vegetables were cooked el dente and the shredded beets were a nice touch.
Matt had a caesar salad with chicken. I know, trust me. I tried to get him to try something outside his comfort zone, but hes kind of a food pussy. Anyways, it was presented in an interesting way that I hadnt seen before. The dressing was creamy and you could taste the anchovy, which I love. The chicken was tender and well seasoned.
For dessert, I had the vanilla poached pear. It was superb. The flavours were delicate and there was a nice sugar crust on the pear which retained the majority of its rigidity. Served with a cannelle of vanilla ice cream and I was loving it.
Matt had the chocolate hazelnut bread pudding. Again, very well done. Good texture, the flavours werent over powering, but complementing each other.
The owner made sure he said good-bye as well, a nice friendly atmosphere is pretty evident in the room. Overall, I was quite happy with it and would love to go back and try a tasting menu. Until next time, stay classy. Also, when my pics get uploaded Ill add them
